Operational Remote Sensing Programme of India started in the year 1988 with the launch of with IRS-1A in 1988. Since, then ISRO has launched many operational remote sensing satellites. From the earlier General Purpose Satellites like IRS-1A, 1B, 1C and 1D, ISRO moved to thematic series of satellites and currently, ISRO has following series of satellites.
Resourcesat Series:
- The satellites in this series are primarily meant for Natural Resources Inventory, Monitoring applications in Land and Water.
- Currently Resourcesat-2and Resourcesat-2A are in Orbit. They are unique satellites having multi-tier imaging capability from the same platform. Resourcesat-2/2A satellite has three cameras.

Cartosat Series:
- The satellites in this series provide high/very high resolution satellite imagery required for Cartographic/ large scale mapping applications.
- Currently, Cartosat-1 (Along Track Stereo Mission with two cameras – PAN (Fore and AFT) and Cartosat-2S (with two cameras) are in orbit.

- The satellites in this series are meant for the ocean and atmospheric studies.
- Currently, Oceansat-2, SARAL (Joint Mission with CNES), Megha-Tropiques (Joint Mission with CNES) and are in Orbit.
- The data from OCM sensor of Oceansat-2 is made available to International Users by ANTRIX.

RISAT Series:
- It is a Microwave satellite series for all weather, day-night imaging.
